Meta Description SEO Audit

Audit missing, short, long, and duplicate meta descriptions and write useful summaries for important search landing pages.

Meta descriptions summarize a page and may be used as a search-result snippet. Screpy provides Missing Description, Short Description, Long Description, and Duplicate Description filters.

Understand Screpy's checks

  • Missing: no usable meta description was found.
  • Short: description length is below 120 characters.
  • Long: description length is above 160 characters.
  • Duplicate: the same description appears on multiple crawled URLs.

These are review thresholds, not fixed display limits. Google primarily creates snippets from page content and may use the meta description when it better describes the page. Snippets vary by query and device. See Google's snippet guidance.

Analyze description findings

  1. Prioritize indexable pages that receive or target search traffic.
  2. Compare the description with the page's actual offer and intent.
  3. Group duplicates by template and page type.
  4. Check whether descriptions are missing because source fields are empty.
  5. Review search snippets and query context rather than length alone.
  6. Confirm important facts are current and visible on the page.

A short description can communicate a simple page well. A long description can still be useful even if only part is displayed. Missing descriptions on low-value utility pages may be lower priority than inaccurate descriptions on major landing pages.

Create useful descriptions

Summarize the specific page, set a realistic expectation, and include concrete details that help a searcher choose. Avoid strings of keywords and site-wide boilerplate. Large product or directory sites can generate descriptions programmatically from accurate page-specific fields, provided the result remains readable and varied.

Example decision

Twenty-eight product descriptions are short but identify the exact model, price range, and availability. Review search performance before expanding them. A separate set of category pages all repeats the homepage description; update the category template with category-specific value and inventory details.

Verify the change

Inspect the public HTML and recrawl. Confirm the intended URLs now have accurate, distinct descriptions. Then monitor Search Console over a comparable period. Judge qualified clicks and conversions, not whether Google always uses the supplied text.

Write descriptions for the page's search intent

A meta description is a candidate summary, not a guaranteed search snippet. Google may use page content when it better matches a query. The best description helps a searcher understand what the page offers and why it is relevant without making unsupported claims.

Length filters highlight candidates for review, but there is no fixed character count that guarantees display. Focus on a clear value proposition, important specifics, and natural language.

Analyze the four issue groups

Missing descriptions matter most on important landing pages where a tailored summary is valuable. Short descriptions may already be sufficient. Long descriptions often contain template text that can be tightened. Duplicate descriptions can expose copied defaults or pages that target the same intent.

For large product or directory sites, programmatic descriptions can be reasonable when they combine accurate, page-specific fields. Test unavailable, empty, and edge-case records so the template does not publish awkward or misleading text.

What to expect after deployment

Missing and Duplicate Description counts should fall after a successful template change. Short and Long counts may shift as copy becomes more useful. Search snippets can still differ by query, and changes may take time to be recrawled and reflected.

Compare click-through behavior only for pages with enough impressions and similar ranking positions. A CTR change may come from rankings, SERP features, seasonality, or competitors—not only description copy.

Google's snippet documentation explains when meta descriptions and page text may be used. Write for the reader, verify rendered markup, and avoid forcing keywords into every variant.

Frequently asked questions

Why does Google show different text from my description?

Google can select text from the page when it appears more relevant to the specific query. Keep the meta description accurate, then improve visible content if important search intents are not represented clearly.

Should duplicate product descriptions be rewritten manually?

Prioritize important pages and improve the template with distinctive, accurate fields. Hand-writing thousands of weak variations is less useful than a reliable programmatic summary and strong page content.
