Keyword Cannibalization
Learn how to distinguish harmful keyword cannibalization from normal multi-page visibility and choose between consolidation and differentiation.
Cannibalization Risks finds queries for which multiple pages receive a meaningful share of impressions. Screpy reviews queries with sufficient data and competing pages within a useful position range, then reports a risk score and a recommended direction: consolidate or differentiate.
Multiple URLs appearing for one query is not automatically a problem. It becomes risky when search engines repeatedly alternate between pages that serve the same intent, authority and links are split, or the wrong page earns the visibility.

The score ranks investigations; it does not replace reviewing the pages and their intent.
Diagnose real cannibalization
1. Define the intent behind the query
Ask what the searcher wants to do and which page should be the best destination. Two URLs can legitimately rank for the same broad term if one is a category and the other is a detailed guide serving a different stage of the journey.
2. Compare page purpose and content overlap
Review titles, headings, core answers, product scope, conversion goal, and audience. If the pages make essentially the same promise and differ only in wording, overlap is likely. If each page has a distinct purpose, the issue may be unclear targeting rather than duplication.
3. Look for instability
Compare periods. Harmful cannibalization often appears as URLs swapping visibility while the combined query performance stagnates or declines. A stable primary page plus a supporting secondary result may be healthy.
4. Check internal and technical signals
Inspect internal anchors, sitemap entries, canonicals, redirects, navigation, and external links. Conflicting signals can make the intended page unclear. Canonicalization helps select a representative URL among duplicate or very similar pages, but it is not a tool for merging pages with different search intent. See Google's canonicalization guidance.
Choose consolidate or differentiate
Consolidate when
- the pages answer the same intent;
- neither page has a necessary independent purpose;
- links, content, and engagement are split across duplicates;
- one stronger URL can preserve the useful material.
Choose the preferred URL, merge unique value, update internal links and sitemaps, and redirect retired URLs to the closest relevant destination. Do not redirect unrelated pages merely to retain traffic.
Differentiate when
- each page serves a distinct intent or funnel stage;
- both pages are useful and should remain indexable;
- the overlap comes from vague titles, headings, anchors, or content scope.
Clarify each page's primary question, title, headings, examples, calls to action, and internal anchor text. Link between them where the user journey benefits.
Example
A site has /seo-audit and /seo-audit-guide. Both rank for “SEO audit,” use similar titles, and explain the same checklist. The first is intended as a service page, but it contains little service information.
If users need both a service and an educational guide, differentiate them: make the service page clearly commercial and the guide genuinely instructional. If both are generic articles, consolidate into the stronger URL. The URL count does not decide the strategy; distinct user value does.
Verify the outcome
Track the intended URL's impressions, clicks, and position plus the query's combined performance. After consolidation, confirm redirects, canonicals, internal links, and sitemap references with a new crawl. After differentiation, confirm that each page begins earning visibility for its intended query cluster.
Avoid mechanical fixes
Removing a useful page, adding a canonical to dissimilar content, or noindexing a page without understanding its role can reduce coverage instead of solving cannibalization.
