Sitemap Checker

Enter a website or sitemap URL. Check XML files, find errors, and see the URLs included in the inspected sitemaps.

What the sitemap checker checks

Understand the XML files that help search engines discover your pages.

XML structure

Find malformed XML, incorrect namespaces and missing URL fields.

Sitemap indexes

Inspect the index and one level of child sitemaps.

URL inventory

See entries, unique URLs and duplicates in inspected files.

Modification dates

Spot invalid or future lastmod dates. Dates are optional.

File limits

Check entry counts and decoded file sizes.

Clear coverage

See which files were parsed, failed or left unchecked.

Check your sitemap in three steps

Use a public website or XML sitemap URL. No account required.

  1. Enter a URL

Enter a website for discovery or an exact sitemap URL. Try Screpy’s index below.

  2. Run the check

Read XML and gzip files, following one index level within the tool’s limits.

  3. Fix and recheck

Review examples, update your sitemap generator and rerun the check. Download JSON to keep the report.

Understand the results

Read status and coverage together. Partial totals cover fully parsed files only.

Green: no issues found

The inspected scope passed. This does not confirm page indexing.

Red: errors to fix

Start with unreadable files, XML syntax and missing or invalid URLs.

Yellow: review warnings

Review duplicates, future dates, ownership questions and partial coverage.

Gray: data unavailable

The file was unreadable or unchecked. Missing data is not success.

Sitemap Checker FAQ

Understand what this free check covers and how to interpret its results.

Which formats and limits are supported?

XML urlsets, sitemap indexes, and gzip-compressed XML are supported. A check inspects up to 20 files, 100,000 page entries, and 100 MiB of decoded content within 27 seconds of analysis. The sitemap standard allows 50,000 entries and 50 MiB per decoded file. Partial results are clearly labeled; nested indexes are not followed.

Are lastmod, priority, and changefreq required?

No. Missing optional fields are not errors. Present values are checked for validity. Google ignores priority and changefreq. The checker recognizes extension namespaces but does not fully validate extension schemas.

How does the sitemap checker find my sitemap?

A website URL checks robots.txt first. Declared sitemap addresses are used as provided. If none are available, the checker probes /sitemap.xml, /sitemap_index.xml, and /sitemap-index.xml. A sitemap URL checks only that file and one level of child files.

Does a valid sitemap mean my pages are indexed?

No. This tool checks sitemap files, not individual page responses, canonical tags, noindex directives, or Google's index. Cross-site submissions may be valid with verified ownership; this checker cannot confirm that ownership.
