To set up ChatGPT Ads for Shopify, install OpenAI's official ChatGPT Ads app in Shopify, connect an eligible Ads Manager account, connect or create an OpenAI Pixel, let the catalog sync, and then build a product or website campaign. That is the flow in OpenAI's current Shopify setup guide. The integration's availability may differ from general Ads Manager availability: as checked on September 28, 2026, OpenAI says the app is available to US Shopify customers, with broader rollout planned. Check the live page for your market.
This walkthrough focuses on the connection and a first-campaign preflight, not on diagnosing every account error. If you are deciding whether the channel fits your business at all, start with how ChatGPT Ads work. A missing product after connection has its own diagnostic path below.
What do you need before connecting Shopify?
You need an active Shopify store, permission to install and manage apps, and permission to manage the Ads Manager account you will connect. OpenAI asks for advertiser details such as website, industry, country, currency and time zone when creating an account. The live Ads Manager availability page determines whether your legal-entity country is supported. A store selling to an eligible country is not automatically the same as an eligible advertiser entity.
Prepare the commercial basics before installing anything: a payment method accepted for the account, a real landing page for each offer, and a clear conversion event such as Purchase. OpenAI's account setup guidance covers organization and billing checks. If more than one agency or store shares access, write down which Shopify store belongs to which Ads Manager account. A correct sync to the wrong account can look exactly like a failed sync when someone later checks a different account.
Pick a small product set for the first test. A hypothetical shoe retailer might start with ten active running shoes that have current prices, available inventory, usable images and product pages that do not require a password. This is an editorial preflight example, not a minimum OpenAI catalog size. It gives you specific item IDs to verify later instead of making “the catalog synced” an untestable statement.
How do you connect the app, catalog and Pixel?
Open the official ChatGPT Ads for Shopify app from Shopify, select Connect Account, and choose the intended Ads Manager account. Create the account first if the app prompts you and you meet the current eligibility requirements. Then select or create the OpenAI Pixel for Shopify and connect it. OpenAI says the integration syncs product inventory and store updates for paid product ads, and sends eligible commerce events through the connected Pixel. Let the sync finish; its duration varies with catalog size and system conditions.
Record three checkpoints as you go: the Shopify store, the Ads Manager account and the connected Pixel. In Ads Manager, confirm that the feed belongs to that same account. For a test product, compare its ID, title, price, availability, image and destination with the current store listing. A successful app connection is a starting state; it is not proof that every item passed feed validation or every conversion event is attributed.
There are two distinct product-discovery paths. The Shopify integration described here is for paid ads. OpenAI's product-feed documentation says those feed items are not automatically surfaced in organic ChatGPT conversations. Organic shopping results follow a separate process. Do not describe an ad-feed sync as an SEO indexing action or judge it by whether ChatGPT organically recommends the item.
How do you launch and check your first campaign?
In the Shopify app, choose Create Campaign, then set a meaningful name, budget, optimization event and supported targeting. OpenAI currently lists all-products, single-product and website ad types in the app, followed by product selection, a preview and launch. Ads Manager may expose more granular controls than the in-app flow; use the route that your account actually offers. OpenAI documents both paths. Its broader campaign guide explains objective and budget choices.
For a first test, the campaign should answer one business question. If you want visits to a product page, a click-oriented objective and a small, coherent product selection make the result easier to interpret. If you want to optimize toward purchases, first verify that Purchase events reach the correct data source; otherwise a conversion objective has little useful signal. A Views objective buys exposure, not a guarantee of traffic or orders.
Before launch, open every destination in a fresh browser session, including mobile. Check the final HTTP response, redirect chain, product availability and image URL. OpenAI's advertiser crawler guidance says its ad-review crawler needs landing-page access and its search crawler needs access to feed image URLs. Screpy's website audit can help identify site-side status and redirect problems; it does not simulate approval or configure OpenAI's crawlers. If the ad specifically shows Crawl Failed, follow our Shopify crawl-error guide rather than repeating the whole setup.
How do you verify the setup before judging results?
Use a short evidence trail rather than a single “connected” badge:
| Check | Expected evidence | If absent |
|---|---|---|
| Connection | Correct Shopify store and Ads Manager account are paired | Recheck the selected account and app permissions |
| Catalog | Test product is active, synced and included in the ad group's eligible count | Inspect feed processing, availability and filters |
| Pixel | The selected commerce event reaches the intended data source | Test event firing and account association |
| Campaign | Ad and landing page preview show the intended product and offer | Correct creative, image or destination before launch |
| Reporting | Delivery appears after launch and reporting has had time to populate | Check campaign status and reporting latency before concluding failure |
The Products tab is not a full inventory screen. OpenAI says its rows are backed by delivery data and may first appear up to seven hours after delivery begins; during setup, the ad-group product count is the better eligibility check. Read the missing-products guide for a precise decision tree. Similarly, a received Pixel event is not yet an attributed conversion: the event type, attribution window and available click signals must align. Our conversion-tracking guide shows that QA path, based on OpenAI's measurement documentation.
Keep your site's required privacy notices and consent controls in place. OpenAI says advertisers should send conversion data only where permitted and obtain necessary consent. Launch readiness includes a lawful measurement setup, not merely a tag that fires.
Where do you go when something fails?
Start with the screen that reports the problem. A failed app connection points to account, permissions or availability. A product absent during ad-group setup points to catalog processing or filters. An empty Products report after launch may simply mean there is no delivery data yet. A landing-page Crawl Failed state is a different path involving URL access or review. A conversion count of zero, despite clicks, calls for event and attribution checks. Treating all four as “Shopify sync is broken” creates wasted work and can lead to unnecessary changes in robots.txt.
OpenAI's Shopify troubleshooting list begins with the connected Ads Manager account, completed feed sync, active products and Pixel connection. Follow the more specific guide only after identifying the surface that is wrong. When contacting support, keep the account, feed and example product IDs ready. Those details help reproduce a real issue; a screenshot of an empty reporting tab alone may not.
The first campaign is ready for interpretation only once the offer, site, feed and measurement checks agree. Then review results over a sensible observation window and make one change at a time. OpenAI's platform is evolving rapidly, so confirm any setting or region claim against the linked current docs before spending.
