Prominence did not produce uniform markup.

The top 100 used HSTS and CSP more often, but they were not more consistent on canonicals or H1 structure. These tiers describe the sample; they do not establish that any measured signal caused a domain's rank.

Interpretation

What teams should take from the data.

Basic metadata is still uneven.

Titles were nearly universal, but one in three analyzed homepages had no usable meta description and four in ten had no canonical element in the returned HTML.

A single H1 is not universal—even at the top.

Only 52.3% of the sample used exactly one non-empty H1. This is a structure observation, not evidence that multiple H1 elements cause lower rankings.

Machine-readable context remains an opportunity.

JSON-LD appeared on 38.6% of analyzed homepages. Structured data can help eligible content communicate meaning, but implementation alone does not guarantee a rich result.

Security adoption varied more than metadata.

HSTS appeared on 69% of analyzed responses, compared with 45.4% for CSP. The top 100 showed the strongest adoption for both headers.

Methodology

A reproducible public sample.

Screpy selected the first 1,000 domains from the Majestic Million list published on August 30, 2026. Majestic provides the source list under a CC BY 3.0 license . Majestic does not sponsor or endorse this study.

  1. 1. One public URL per domain HTTPS homepages were requested and redirects were followed.
  2. 2. Fixed retrieval limits Each request had a 7-second deadline and a 2 MiB HTML processing limit.
  3. 3. Server HTML only JavaScript was not rendered. Signals injected only after hydration were not observed.
  4. 4. Failed requests excluded Page-level percentages use the 899 responses with analyzable HTML as the denominator.
Limitations: This is a homepage implementation benchmark, not a ranking-factor study. Prominent domains include platforms, redirect services, government hosts, and domains that intentionally return restricted or minimal pages. Results can change as sites and the source list change.

Does this benchmark use Screpy customer data?

No. This edition uses a public list of prominent domains and fetches their public homepages. No customer project, Search Console, analytics, or account data is included.

Does a missing signal prove that a page cannot rank?

No. The benchmark measures implementation, not rankings or causation. Some signals are recommendations, accessibility aids, sharing metadata, or security controls rather than direct ranking requirements.

Why were only homepages analyzed?

A single public entry URL per domain keeps the sample reproducible and limits load on third-party websites. The findings should not be generalized to every page on each site.

How was basic indexability estimated?

The basic indexability signal required a 2xx response and no robots or Googlebot noindex directive in the returned HTML. It did not test robots.txt, X-Robots-Tag, canonical selection, rendering, or search-engine indexing.
